Holidays and all their joy and sadness

(plus minor annoyances)

Family. Need I say more? All their nuances and capricious nature...

The holidays were good, but family heath is always in the back of my mind. My grandmother is showing signs of alzheimers after asking questions repeatedly and asking what day it was. My father's health is the main concern now and hearing my father and mother losing hope is not keeping my spirits up. A car ride with my mother brought up how it was good that I was saving days off from work because I may need them with all the bad news my father has been getting. Basically my dad is getting radiation treatments for a lung tumor, neglecting his liver tumors since if my father can not breath, then cancer or no, he is in trouble. He is on oxygen full time due to this. He was more jovial than during Thanksgiving, but it is hard to see him not getting any better. I almost broke down when he started to cry when I said my goodbyes when heading back to Philly. He does not cry.

I do not want to start thinking of him passing away nor what kind of "passing" that would be if it is by cancer's hand. His younger sister died from breast cancer years ago. That was tough. I do not want to think about what would happen if my mother lost her mother and her husband in the same year. I can not see 2010 being a good year.

I received an update on my father today. The chemo treatment is not working. This is the fifth different chemo treatment that has failed to do anything to my father's tumors. The doctors are switching him to radiation therapy for 15 days (one treatment a day) into the new year. This will target the tumor in his lung but will do nothing for the small spots spread out in his liver. I am not sure what will be done for the liver tumours. they are small, but cheom and radiation are not a good choice in combination for my father. This was a major blow to my family and I after being hopefully that this last treatment would do something.

I helped out for a good 4 months on a project that is turning into a mess right now. (Among many things going wrong, it does not fit on site. 0 for 1 to the firm that did the survey). To top it off, one part is the renovation of a historic building that was once a US mint. (The third Philadelphia mint building). The original parts are gorgeous, if a bit needing of repair. There is even an old (now defunct) drainage way under the library where round carpet tiles hide the metal covers.
The interesting thing is an old rumor exists that a former worker in the mint building hid a bag of gold coins right before the building was to close down. No one knows if it is true or not, but apparently the FBI found it convincing enough to do a thorough check of the building, head to toe for such a thing last week. Very cool stuff!

I will just have to hide my golden halo for now...lay low until things pass <.

I spoke to mumsy dearest tonight to get an update on my father. The newest treatment of chemo is kicking his butt, making his white and red blood cell count plummet, but the counts bounced back so the doctors are confident he can go out to public places now. It is a bit odd to hear a doctor say, "Get some rest and avoid the mall."

Also in the conversation was things I apparently did when I was young.

1. I pulled out the outlet plugs and stuck my finger in the socket when I was 14 months.
2. My sister told my parents i had eaten a poisonous mushroom when I was 2. Poison control was called and I received ipecac to induce vomiting. I refused to throw up. It took thrice the normal dosage to make me PROJECTILE VOMIT ACROSS THE KITCHEN and show...no mushroom. I will not reliquish that which is rightfully in my stomach easily!

I felt you all deserve an explanation for why I am the way I am :)
